I've been writing articles and books for a general audience since
1995. This site tells you about me and profiles my recent books.
I grew up on the west coast of Canada and studied marine biology
at the University of Victoria and the University of British
Columbia. I worked as an independent conservation biologist
until 2005, an occupation that gave me a chance to see quite a lot
of South America and Asia. I began writing seriously in 1997 with
Against the Current, a travel column for the Victoria Times-
Colonist, followed by another column, Reality Check, for Waters
magazine, as well as science-travel articles for Escape and Westworld.
My first book for a general audience, The End of the River, was
published in 2008. My latest book is Sea Trial (2019), also non-
fiction. My other books are the mysteries Beethoven's Tenth and
Tokyo Girl and the thriller Gone Grizzly. Each book has its own page
on this website, with descriptions, reviews and where to buy.
